An Interview with San Antonio Reggae Stars - The River Tones

I finally got the chance to sit down with River-Tones, a band we've had on the BlueJay Records label for almost 3 years now. This was as great of a chance as any to properly introduce them to you. Our conversation is listed below. Tell us about the band members! Where are y'all from? We are all from SA Texas. Edward and Alex have the most experience in being in bands Edward (Lead guitar) 2-4 yrs Alex (Drummer) 10yrs, Brandon (Singer) Adrian (Rhythm guitar & Keys) and Kailan (Bass) our 1st band together. What is your band name and how long have you been playing music under this name? We are River-Tones and we’ve been playing 4yrs but if we’re not counting 2020 then 3yrs

How did you guys get into music? Ed & Adrian were jamming and working on projects together when Edward had invited Brandon to sit in on writing. From there our single Trip was made. The next few months after looking a replacement bassist who can step up to the role Kailan was introduced, shortly after Alex who had been planning on returning to the stage then joined the group which make up the line up for River-Tones How would y'all define your own musical style? We love the reggae style but we have these blues, indie funk, and a nice blend of atmospheric/psychedelic vibes. So we call it Reggae fusion. Who are your influences? We find our inspiration by listening to The Black Seeds, 311, Gorillaz, Pepper, Capistrano, Pink Floyd, Kaya Kotura, The Elovators, Saltwater Slide, Ocean Alley, and Incubus

What were your most favorite moments as a band? When we played on a boat in Aug 2019 and never thought we would find ourselves. All this but it happened just before Rona hit but man was it a gig we personally will never forget and pretty much talk about all the time. If you could open up for any band or artist in the world, who would you choose? Wow that’s a hard one, but if we had to choose we would love to open up for The Elovators, Stick Figure, Ocean Alley. That would be so intense and surreal. What is the best part about being a San Antonio band? First our fans in SA, much love to everyone who supports us. Since we are from here a majority of our fan base we know personally so we can’t thank everyone enough for the support we get and another great thing about being a SA band is the local bands in the area are really supportive and down to earth. We understand that making it in the music business can be very challenging but having our local bands take time to support during gigs that we find ourselves playing together. We get to sit around and tell stories of the tricks and trades it’s very open door feeling and overall a welcoming atmosphere. We feel with that, that’s a great learning experience and in turn we try to show the same love to others outside of SA in hopes we can just do what we as musicians love to do; create, inspire, and make our dreams become reality.

What are your musical aspirations for the future? A tour would be dope hopefully when things go back to normal, we understand the circumstances and are patient fellas. Our goal would be to take the show from Florida all the way to Cali. Where can our readers find your music? You can find us on Spotify (add us on your playlists!) Apple Music, YouTube, Amazon music, pretty much major music platforms. But check out our band label Expect Delays Records, our music along side with our brothers from Saltwater Slide, Capistrano, Kaya Kotura, Zander Burns, and Formitive Fire we put on a livestream everyone few months to bring the show to YOU!
