An Interview with fast rising San Antonio band Broke in China

This weekend, I got the marvelous opportunity to sit down with Broke in China, a group of San Antonio rockers who've been on the BlueJay Records label for almost a year now. Our interview is listed below.

Tell us about the band members! Where are y'all from?

Logan: "I was born in San Antonio and raised in Boerne my whole life."

Andy: "San Antonio born, Los Angeles raised"

Johnny: "I was born in Guadalajara Mexico but raised in Boerne Texas since I was 4. I’m 22 now."

What is your band name and how long have you been playing music under this name?

Logan: "The name of our band is Broke in China and we’ve been playing under the name for a little less than a year and a half."

How did you guys get into music?

Johnny: "I’ve always had a fascination with art. Growing up I loved to draw as well and just create things. I heard Hey There Delilah on the radio and I realized I wanted to try out guitar. My dad bought me my first guitar at 14 and the rest is history as they say."

Logan: "I got into music in 5th grade when I started playing viola in the school orchestra. I picked up drums in 8th grade and my path for music has been set in stone since then."

Kevin: "Got in to music when Johnny first got a guitar. He convinced me to get one too and the rest is history."

Andy: " My uncles got me heavy into classic rock and metal since they used to work in radio."

How would y'all define your own musical style?

Johnny: "Our main songwriting style so far is a love child between Foo Fighters, Metallica and Nirvana. With a little babysitting by The Beatles. Although those influences mainly come from me. Logan, Andy, & Kevin have their own musical styles and directions. So our music will only expand exponentially past that."

Andy: " I feel my personal musical style is fun, fast, and relatable— I love getting to incorporate that same high-energy style into the band’s music."

Kevin: "Melodic but heavy."

Logan: "I would describe my drumming as fairly straightforward with elements of metal in some songs and funk in others."

Who are your influences?

Logan: "My main drumming inspirations goes from Dave Grohl, to Jay Weinberg, Danny caddy, and Ben Thatcher."

Kevin: "The Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age, Albert Hammond Jr."

Andy: "Most definitely Blink 182, Sum 41, and pretty much any punk/rock act from the 90s-2000s."

Johnny: "My MAIN influences are The Beatles, Foo Fighters, Nirvana and Metallica."

What were your most favorite moments as a band?

Andy: "I haven’t been in long, but definitely the first rehearsal where we really nailed every song we played, and it kinda just sunk in like “Wow, this is REAL!”

Kevin: "Don’t have one yet. I just joined."

Johnny: "One of my favorite moments as a band is jamming a new song together. We played a show called Woodstock SA once. The stage was huge and we killed the set that day. Best show I’ve ever performed at to this day."

If you could open up for any band or artist in the world, who would you choose?

Johnny: "I would be CRAZY not to say Foo Fighters."

Andy: " Blink 182. Hands down."

Kevin: "The Strokes."

Logan: "Soundgarden would be awesome, cage the elephant too, even though it’s not exactly our style."

What is the best part about being a San Antonio band?

Andy: " It’s cool to play in a town with so much history and culture, especially being born here— it’s an amazing city."

Johnny: "The local artists you meet. No matter the genre, we all share this innate love for music that makes us spend countless hours of our lives doing something we love. Every band I’ve met so far has that same passion and it’s great."

Kevin: "A lot of diversity in the scene and close to bigger cities to tour in."

Logan: "Best part of being a San Antonio band is all the cool places to gig at, a lot of rock and metal in San Antonio"

What are your musical aspirations for the future?

Johnny: "Nothing but the top. I want to be remembered and listened to with as much enthusiasm and passion as I listen to my favorite artists today."

Andy: "We’ve all agreed that we want to do this for the long-run. We want to make our music known, and we’re going to keep trying new things until we achieve just that."

Kevin: "Just to get better as a musician and hopefully start writing more, and for the band try to get a bigger outreach and gig as much as possible."

Logan: "I’d like to take it as far as I can possibly go. Big shows and big crowds."

And lastly, Where can our readers find your music?

Andy: "Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, hell just about anywhere!"
